Invisible teleprompter apps for Mac, compared
Several Mac apps can keep a script on your screen while staying out of Zoom screen shares and recordings. They differ in where the text lives, how it scrolls, and what you pay. Here is the field as of September 2026.
The two approaches
Every app here relies on the same macOS capability: a window can be excluded from screen capture, so you see it and the share does not. (In Zoom, that requires the "Capture with window filtering" capture mode; our Zoom guide covers it.) The split is in the reading surface:
- Notch or menu-bar prompters tuck a thin strip of text at the very top of the screen. Discreet even in person, but a small surface.
- Overlay prompters give you a full resizable window you can park right under your camera.
The apps
Promptly
Our app. The overlay scrolls by listening to your voice: it follows what you actually say, waits when you pause or ad lib, and re-anchors automatically when you skip around. Inline action cues fire reminders (advance a slide, run a demo step) as you reach them. Built for Zoom; Meet and Teams in testing. macOS 13+.
CueNotch
A native Mac prompter that lives around the notch area, with voice-synced scrolling and an invisible screen-share mode. A good fit if you want maximum discretion and are comfortable reading from the top edge of the screen.
NotchPrompter
A free, open-source prompter that sits in the notch area and stays out of recordings and shares. The obvious starting point if you want to try the notch approach at zero cost.
VoicePrompter
A transparent always-on-top window with voice tracking that follows your words, invisible in Zoom, Meet, Teams, OBS, and Loom according to its site. Conceptually the closest competitor to Promptly.
FlowPrompter
A desktop teleprompter aimed at Zoom calls, tutorials, and live demos, with notes hidden from shares, recordings, and screenshots.
ShareSpeak
A budget option with a one-time lifetime price. Invisible to participants when you share your screen or a window in Zoom.
How to choose
- You want free: start with NotchPrompter and see if the notch surface works for you.
- You want the cheapest one-time purchase: ShareSpeak.
- You read long scripts on high-stakes calls (sales demos, pitches, webinars) and want the prompter to follow you rather than the other way around: pick a voice-tracked overlay. That is Promptly or VoicePrompter; we would obviously suggest trying Promptly free for 3 days and judging the tracking quality yourself on a real call.
